If you felt your heart expand this week it would be because you now
need room to love an extra niece. Eliza Jayne Owen arrived on
Wednesday (!!!!) night, January 6, surprising all of us! (TWO full
weeks early!)
I started having contractions Wednesday morning, but luckily (tender
mercy) Michael had decided to work from home that day (like I said, we
still weren't expecting to see our baby for another couple of weeks!).
So, between contractions all day, we prepared our home for the
anticipated arrival of our little girl. By the time we got to the
hospital, I thought our little girl would probably share a birthday
with Adam. However, things progressed quickly (about twice as fast as
with Abby), and Eliza Jayne entered the world at 10:22 pm, January 6,
2010. She weighed in at 6 lbs, 15 oz and 18 in long (1/2 lb heavier
and 1/2 in shorter than Abby). Towards the end of labor, her heart
rate hadn't been recovering very well, so they got her out quickly,
with the help of forceps (you'll notice some bruises on her cheeks in
the first pictures). To make sure her lungs were inflating completely
they whisked her to the NICU for the first hour - but she came out of
everything just fine. We're so grateful for doctors and nurses that
know how to help little babies make a safe entrance into the world!
Her name fits her well - she's already a survivor! You'll remember
Eliza Cusworth Burton (Lauren - the oldest woman in that 4-generation
picture), who crossed the plains with the Willie and Martin handcart
companies (I need to look up which one...) - and also in that picture
is Anna Eliza Reynolds and Era Garlick (the "E" stands for Eliza). On
the Hicken side, I noticed that when you put the names of Mazie and
her mother, Ella Maria Murdock, next to each other, you see "Ella
Mazie" which kind of spells out "El iza". So, for all those reasons,
her name is significant. Jayne is essentially after Mom (JaLayne - I
know you know her name, I just typed it for comparison) - and spelling
it with a "y" is for Mom and me (Elayne).
She is a sweet little girl - beloved by all, especially her big
sister! Abby was so eager to see her and account for all her body
parts: ears, eyes, nose, mouth, toes, fingers, etc. We love our
little family and can't wait for you to meet Eliza!
